A ‘gummy smile’ is the prominence of gum tissue when smiling. This can be a source of embarrassment for some people and they can often avoid smiling in photographs as they are unable to fully close their mouth or they feel very self conscious.
Factors leading to this include:-
- A short upper lip
- Elevation of the upper lip due to a hyperactive muscle
- Gums that are enlarged or long (gingival hypertrophy)
- Teeth that may appear short and remain partially covered by gum tissue
- The appearance of the gums ‘bulging out’ due to an overgrowth of the upper jaw (vertical maxillary excess)
Treatment
A small amount of anti wrinkle product can be injected into the top half of the muscle, to reduce the muscle activity and allow a delicate drop in the top lip. To provide some balance, patients additionally have lip filler in order to prevent the lips sliding above the teeth.
